Wilt And Growth Is Temporarily: If plants are to grow healthily without check, they must have access to a constant supply of water or they will wilt and growth is temporarily halted. If water is not made available to them soon after wilting, their leaves will turn crisp and brown and they will eventually die. It is particularly important to keep vegetables and fruit well-watered. Sandy soils will dry out more quickly than clay soils, and will have to be watered sooner tn a drought.
When hoeing, make sure the blade is always sharp so that the weeds are severed from their roots rather than pulled up with them.
Choose a warm, drying day so that the weeds wilt and die quickly after hoeing. Take care when hoeing closely around crop plants because any damage caused is quickly colonized by disease organisms. Keep the hoe in the upper, surface layers of the soil so as not to bring up more weed seeds to germinate and cause further problems. The dry soil produced by surface hoeing acts as a mulch which in itself inhibits weed growth.
Lateral growth in trees frequently begins later than growth in height, but the period of lateral growth is longer. Rates of lateral growth likewise are low at the outset, increasing after a few weeks and then diminishing. In view of the long annual period of lateral growth in trees, deleterious environmental conditions may exercise a pronounced effect on growth. In the wood of trees of temperate regions, narrow and wide growth rings may be observed, marking years characterized by unfavorable and favorable conditions for growth.
