Victorian-style Home: After an attack of angina in Cleveland, Hayes died on Jan. 17, 1893, at his estate, Spiegel Grove, in Fremont. The estate, including the Victorian-style home, the gravesite, and a memorial library, are open to the public.
To the British realist genre painters of the Victorian period, photography was an especial boon, though they would seldom admit it. For example, William Powell Frith, the popular genre painter of Victorian England, stated in 1893: "In my opinion photography has not benefitted art at all,"23 yet in 1863 the London periodical.
With the coming of the Victorian period, there were a number of large furniture producers located in Boston. One of these was A. Eliaers who had migrated from Paris about 1835 and styled himself as "French cabinetmaker." He was one of the first to popularize the Victorian furniture with characteristic cabriole legs, finger molding and carved fruit or flower Ornaments The size of his shop is indicated by his address. "Nos. 12 to 24 Cornhill, Boston, Mass."
