Use A Computer To Determine: A computer that will be able to detect its own malfunctions and then repair itself was expected to be ready for experimental operation late in 1968. Called STAR, for self-testing and repairing, the computer will have a special coding system for detecting faults, a central unit to determine the cause of the trouble, and a set of spare parts that can be used to replace any malfunctioning unit.
Potential applications of the computer made possible by microelectronics include a small computer in every home or a pocket computer terminal that can be connected to a powerful central computer via the telephone. Such devices may be used to solve our numerical problems (e.g., income tax, or our bank balance) or as a creative tool to relate our knowledge and experiences to our future actions.
5. Define data, field, software, central processing unit, CRT, VDT, downtime, and backup.
6. Use a computer to determine availability, sell rooms, and enter reservations.
