Unifies The House And Garden:

Unifies The House And Garden Looking back to the house from the garden, the house should be an integral part of the design rather than stand out. A conservatory or sun room can be designed to open on to a patio so that in summer, when the doors are open, the garden feels as though it is extending into the house and vice versa. Climbers and Wall plants help soften the harsh outline of a building and act as a Vvnk between tVve house and the garden.

"The kitchen is usually the first room a homeowner wants to remodel," explained Christine Santana, president of the Pasadena chapter of ASID. A well-designed kitchen improvement can add thousands of dollars to a home's value; most of the cost can be recouped at sale, according to ASID members. One of the tour homes, a 1941 ranch-style home in the Linda Vista area, was completely updated by Michele Hughes for a young professional couple. After the remodeling, all that was left of the original kitchen were exterior walls and foundation. A marble-topped chef's Table now forms the centerpiece of the newly designed kitchen. Textured beams added to the ceiling create a feeling of coziness along with a color scheme that unifies the house and garden. Two rooms of the house have been adapted as work areas and feature sophisticated storage spaces with custom cabinetry.

As box turtle needs plenty of room and freedom, it is best maintained as a house and garden pet. If it is to be observed at school, place it in woodland habitat of a large terrarium (see Part II); keep it for a few days and then return it to freedom of home and garden. In home garden in natural range, provide area in garden where pet can bury itself for hibernation during winter.
