Tract Home:

Tract Home Someday I'll be able to purchase a house in Southern California whether it will be a fixer-upper, tract home or custom built is still yet to be determined. But when that example of cottage, Craftsman, adobe or colonial design comes to fruition, one of its shining points must be the garage.

Destitution damaged Confederate morale. The central government made no provision for soldiers' dependents. Slight aid from some states and charitable individuals did not solve the problem. During the last year and a half women began to break under the strain. Unable to extract a living from the family farm and facing starvation, many women implored their husbands to desert the Confederate Army. "Before God, Edward, unless you come home we must die!" wrote one. "Last night I was aroused by little Eddie's crying. . . '. He said 'Oh, Mamma, I'm so hungry!' " And yet most of those at home sustained the war to the end. Besides managing farms, women sewed, clerked, spied on the enemy, and nursed the wounded.

Thirteen sections have been used, but a typical Requiem contains nine: Introit, Kyrie, Gradual and Tract, Sequence or Prose, Offertorium, Sanctus, Benedictus, Agnus Dei, and Communio. The absence of the joyful sections of the regular Mass (Gloria and Credo) and replacement of the Alleluia by the Tract, and the added Sequence or Dies Irae, lend particular prominence to the sections from the Proper, their texts having special relevance to the solemn occasion.
