These Small Flowering:

These Small Flowering The large-flowered clematis are divided into several groups according to their parentage. These groups are Florida, flowering mainly in early and mid-summer; Jackmanii, flowering mainly in late summer and early fall; Lanuginosa, flowering at different times between mid-summer and the early fall; Patens, flowering mainly in early to mid-summer; Texensis, flowering mainly from late summer to mid-fall and Viticella, also flowering mainly from late summer to mid-fall.

A few large trees are handsome in bloom, notably horsechestnut, empress tree, yel-lowwood, Chinese scholar tree, flowering ash, catalpa, and some magnolias. The majority of trees highly decorative in bloom, however, are of modest size, 30 feet or less high on the average, although some individuals and some kinds may exceed this. These small flowering trees are exceedingly useful for garden ornamentation. They are handsome in small groups, in boundary plantings and as single lawn specimens. Don't clutter the lawn by dotting even the most lovely about without considering good composition and the importance of leaving open areas. A garden consists of both plants and spaces.

I planned and set out a small bulb bed (really corms and bulbs) this fall and it began to bloom within two weeks of planting—there was no long wait for roots to develop, no months of winter twilight before the flowers appeared! Yet no magic was involved. For the bulbs were six species of colchicum (Colchicum spp.), three species of the fall- ] flowering crocus (Crocus spp.), and a clump of Sternbergia lutea, all autumn-flowering plants.
