The Mother Was Advised: The student was advised to develop his negatives on the very day they were taken "whilst yet the mental impression of what you are trying for is fresh." He rejected retouching as "the process by which a good, bad, or indifferent photograph is converted into a bad drawing or painting.... The technique of photography is perfect, no such botchy aids are necessary." For printing he advised two processes, the platinotype and photogravure, or photo-etching.
Fay and Doll (42, 1949) reported a striking instance of a seven-year-old boy whose case the psychologist and pediatrician had diagnosed as one of "essential idiocy." The mother was advised to "place the child in an institution and forget that he had been born." Further diagnosis showed normal social behavior. The retardation in language development appeared to be the result of impairment of a portion of the brain.
Gestation takes 16 days; 7-15 in litter; young born pink, naked, and blind. Do not disturb young or mother for at least a week after birth; if disturbed mother will either kill and eat the young or neglect them and allow them to die. After 3 weeks, remove young from mother; otherwise, mother fights with them and often kills them. Sexes should be separated before young reach maturity at 43 days.
