Technical Education: The education required for a technical career in radio ranges from a few courses in a vocationally oriented high school to a Ph. D. in electrical engineering. Persons with various levels of technical education can find interesting careers in radio.
The salesman at a radio station sells time rather than a product. He may sell an entire program, a segment of a program, or spot announcements to advertisers. He must have a thorough knowledge of the station's programming in order to fill the needs of the advertiser.
Education in Chile is compulsory for all children between the ages of 7 and 15. The structure of the educational system underwent considerable change following a study by a national planning commission. Under the new plan, which went into effect in 1966, the basic cycle of general education, which was formerly 6 years, was extended to 8 years with the intent to extend it to 9 years when circumstances should permit. The secondary cycle was divided into two types: (1) scientific-humanistic, to be completed in 3 years when the basic general cycle of 9 years is in full operation; and (2) technical-vocational to be completed in 2 or 3 years. Formerly the secondary cycle consisted of 6 years of academic studies or a technical-vocational program of 6 or 7 years. University courses range in length from 2 to 7 years, according to the profession studied.
The four universities are, in order of foundation, St. Andrews (1411), Glasgow (1451), Aberdeen (1494), and Edinburgh (1583). Owing to a shortage of places in them, attempts are being made to persuade the government to establish an entirely new university, while the Royal College of Science and Technology at Glasgow has sought and obtained recognition as an institution of university status. The local education authorities are also engaged in making more adequate provision for technical education.
