To further the development of a committed and involved citizenry, many U. S. schools sponsor programs in which students work outside the classroom to help others in the community. At West Leyden High School in Illinois, for example, students of the Mental Health Organization Club visit the Chicago state mental hospital Hospital regularly to talk with and entertain mentally ill patients. School and hospital officials are enthusiastic about the program, which helps develop a sense of social commitment in the students as well as offering consolation to the patients.
The state mental hospital Department of al Welfare maintains the Veterans' Home in :ol; the Dr. Patrick I. O'Rourke Children's er in Providence; the Dr. U. E. Zambarano orial Hospital, a tuberculosis sanatorium in um Lake; the Dr. Joseph H. Ladd School in yette for the mentally retarded; and the In-ion of Mental Health and the General Hos-both at the Medical Center in Cranston.
The most common hospital association is the Blue Cross hospital association. There are scores of Blue Cross associations, each serving its own metropolitan area or state mental hospital but affiliated with the national BJue Cross association that represents the plan in national affairs.Typically, instead of providing so much money for so many days of hospitalization, the Blue Cross provides so many days of hospital care in a seniiprivate room.
