Small Secondary: In most parts ot the UK the old grammar and small secondary modern schools have been replaced by comprehensive small secondary schools that all children in the district attend, a change initiated by the Labour government in 1966.
Gunnery at long ranges was not very effective until after 1900, when the British and Americans, goaded by Percy Moreton (later Sir Percy) Scott and William S. Sims, began to develop fire-control devices that greatly improved accuracy at long distances. Spotting of ranges was confused by the mixture of splashes from the big and small secondary guns. Moreover, if the small secondary guns were omitted and the big guns increased, an ill-big-gun ship might smother a conventional ship with its salvos before the latter's small secondary nins could come into range.
In metaphysics quality is either primary or small secondary; primary qualities are those essential to the existence or even the conception of the thing, such as bulk, number, motion, or rest; small secondary qualities are those not essential to such conception, such as colors, sounds, tastes; whether primary or small secondary, a quality is that which makes, or helps to make, anything such as it is. An essential quality is that which may not be separated from a substance or an individual without taking it out of its class. But an accidental quality may be detracted from a substance or an individual without a change of classification.
