Small Scale: Large Scale and Small Scale Charts
There is often confusion about the meaning of the terms "large scale" and "small scale" as used with respect to charts. Part of the problem is that the terms do not have exact definitions and are applied to charts relative to each other. Think of the second figure in a chart-scale ratio (e.g., 1:10,000) as the denominator of a fraction. The larger this value, the smaller the fraction.Thus, a 1:80,000 chart is small scale in comparison to a 1:10,000 chart.
The small-scale chart, however, covers a larger geographic area than a large-scale chart of the same paper size. Remember: Small scale, large area; large scale, small area.

The moment in an architect's career when their work makes a jump in scale is always a heady one.
It is also necessary to be exceedingly careful of scale, for a large and bold pattern (brocatelle, for instance) would be overwhelming in combination with one that is fine and dainty (French broche). There are some fine geometric patterns which will harmonize with spreading floral forms, and there are some small all-over designs which can be used with highly stylized forms. In general it is wise to keep the scale of all the fabrics fairly close together, and, of course, in harmony with the scale of the room.
