Single- House Legislature: Legislature.—The General Assembly, which meets annually on the first Tuesday in January, usually for 60 legislative days, consists of a Senate of 50 members and a House of Representatives of 100 members, all of whom serve two-year terms. In 1966 the General Assembly reapportioned the legislature on a strict basis of population. The 1966 legislature was the first to be elected under the new redistricting plan.
In 1863 a new constitution was drawn up. Extremely democratic, the document provided for a single- house legislaturehouse legislature based on proportional representation and elected by direct, secret, and universal male suffrage. The powers of the king were further limited.
The government of Quebec is composed of a lieutenant governor, an Executive Council (or cabinet), and a unicameral legislature called the National Assembly of Quebec, with 108 elected members. (Formerly, Quebec had a bicameral legislature ; the upper house, the Legislative Council, abolished itself in 1968. The name of the lower house, the Legislative Assembly, was changed at that time.) The Executive Council is appointed by the lieutenant governor from the members of the legislature; the premier is president ex officio.
