Secondary Education:

Secondary Education German education operates on a three-track pattern. After four years (ages 6-10) of compulsory primary school, students either attend a Gymnasium (academic secondary education school), Realsclmlc (general high school) or Haiiptsclnilc (general school). In France higher education is free to qualified students. Nearly 1 m. students continue their studies after secondary education school in 72 universities and in technological institutes and grandes ecoles.

Punahou, on Oahu, was the first U.S. secondary education school founded west of the Mississippi (1840). lolani, also on Oahu, is one of the largest boys secondary education schools founded in the United States by the Episcopalians. Finally, Hawaii is one of the few states in Union whose public elementary and second-schools are entirely in the hands of a state (the Department of Education) rather those of the counties or communities. The of education at the elementary and second-level is undertaken also by a large number private schools.

The GCE at ordinary level is taken by a qualified group of about 20% of the secondary education school students. In 1965 another nationally sponsored examination—the certificate of secondary education—designed for the next 40%, was introduced. This examination, which is locally administered and mainly under the control of secondary education school teachers, provides the possibility of a wider range of subjects and treatment than the GCE.
