Regulate Growth Responses:

Regulate Growth Responses Certain chemicals will promote or regulate growth responses in plants when used in minute dosages, and they are used by gardeners for plant propagation. The majority of rooting hormones are powders. In many cases fungicidal chemicals are also incorporated into the powders, so helping against any rots that may develop in the cuttings.

In an attempt to develop an analytical citizenry, high school students in Woodside, Calif., were enrolled in a brief program designed to promote tolerance to nonconformity by comparing their responses to a questionnaire with the responses obtained from a cross section of the adult population. In analyzing and comparing these responses, the students became aware of their own and other people's prejudices.

The second revolutionary advance in developmental plant biology was one made by botanists themselves. It was the discovery of several new plant hormones, substances which regulate the growth and development of plants. For almost 30 years after its discovery as a plant hormone in 1926, auxin had been regarded as the substance that could account for nearly all the phenomena of plant growth and development in which hormone action was involved.
