Rass Growth Is Short: The period of active ;rass growth is short and production is low, yet [razing and herding, particularly of reindeer, > common in northern Europe and Asia. It is [uite limited in Alaska and northern Canada. Subtropical desert shrub, like its more tem-icrate counterpart, supports limited amounts of jass, yet areas of grassland do occur.
The steppe, or short-grass region, that lies be-iveen the desert shrub and the tropical savanna ; a counterpart of the higher latitude steppe nd contains many of the same species.
Tropical savanna grasslands are extensive in outh America, Africa, India, southeast Asia, and orthern Australia. They occur as areas of tall rass surrounding tropical rain forest and range ito steppes on their drier side.
Lateral growth in trees frequently begins later than growth in height, but the period of lateral growth is longer. Rates of lateral growth likewise are low at the outset, increasing after a few weeks and then diminishing. In view of the long annual period of lateral growth in trees, deleterious environmental conditions may exercise a pronounced effect on growth. In the wood of trees of temperate regions, narrow and wide growth rings may be observed, marking years characterized by unfavorable and favorable conditions for growth.
