Radars For Small: Radars have two principal applications aboard ships and small craft. Although they are often thought of primarily as anti-collision devices, radars are used even more often to assist in the piloting of the vessel.
Air search radars must be able to resolve targets in elevation as well as in azimuth, In the more advanced types this is accomplished by designing the antenna to radiate a pencil beam and by using frequency-scanning to provide rapid coverage of the region to be searched. Both types of search radars usually operate at S-band frequencies.
Search radars are used by the United States Army in the field to detect approaching aircraft and to designate specific targets to antiaircraft batteries. These radars are similar to the air search radars of the United States Navy, but are designed for portable use. A radar of this type is shown in Fig. 12.
