Parents Can Advance:

Parents Can Advance We connected widi some parents well; widi most intermittendy; but widi a fair proportion never. We realized diat we were not responding sufficiendy to die real, if usually unexpressed, concern of all the parents: the desire to continue to be effective in their children's intellectual development and daily learning. All the work at fairs and jumble sales did not advance diis need one iota and we had seemed, traditionally, content to leave it so.

An advance deposit equal to a one-night room charge plus tax may be accepted to guarantee a reservation. (Figure 4-6 shows an example advance deposit form.) Small properties discourage advance deposits because of the additional paperwork required. In recent years, credit card guarantees have become much more common in the United States. However, overseas, hotels often require advance payment in full to hold a reservation, regardless of the anticipated arrival time.

A primary cause of language retardation among disadvantaged children is the lack of reinforcement of their use of language. Parents can advance the linguistic development of their child through a willingness to converse with him. By asking questions of the child, reacting to his statements, and encouraging him to "think out loud," parents can reinforce and reward the child's use of language and aid in its further development.
