Older Brother: Problems do not occur singly. For example, Georgie, eight years old and the younger of two brothers, was a persistent feeding problem. His mother continually tried to force him to eat when his desire for food was low. As a result, eating became an emotional situation. He was retarded in speech and reading, and appeared to enjoy the power over adults that he gained from his failure to talk and read like other children. He may also have sensed his older brother's hostility and have been afraid to succeed in school, lest he increase his brother's hostility toward him. He was restless and nervous. He was disobedient.
Guardi was born in Venice on Oct. 5, 1712, into a family of painters. He probably had his early training from his older brother Gian Antonio Guardi (1699-1760), who assumed charge of the family studio after the death of their father in 1716. Francesco's early career is obscure; he assisted his brother and undertook occasional independent work. A notice of 1764 refers to him as a pupil of Canaletto. Uncertain as the citation's meaning is, it does establish that he was already known as a view painter.
Louis MARIE QUICHERAT (1799-1844), his older brother, French philologist, was an authority on French and Latin verse, and from 1843 was in charge of the Ste. Genevieve Library in Paris. Among his published works were Traite de versification latine (1826) ; Thesaurus poeticus linguae Latinae (1836) ; Traite de versification fran$aise (1838); Melanges philologiqucs (1879).
