Made A Mental Note: 8. As an example of an excellent research article, study Cyril Burt's "The Inheritance of Mental Ability" in The American Psychologist, January 1955. Note how he first gives a brief historical survey, then raises various hypotheses and questions, and presents, with critical comments, evidence pro and con with respect to each. Note also his caution in making generalizations and drawing conclusions, and his emphasis on further research, especially intensive studies of children by psychologists and of pure strains of animals by geneticists.
At this stage the teacher began to widen the children's options, giving them more choice. She also changed some of the existing choices, for example, by putting bubbles in the water and setting out printing rather than painting with a brush. During this time the teacher observed the children and made a mental note of the preferences they seemed to have in their tasks they undertook. She noted that Eleanor seemed to prefer opportunities to role play.
Note of welcome to Americans: The American Businessmen's Club, at 112 Rokin, corner of Spui, is always happy to extend a cordial hand, and help, to overseas visitors.
Hotel note: Guests with full-board arrangements may have coupons for lunch in other hotels.
Taxi note: In Amsterdam taxis nearly always come quickly when you phone for them.
