Editors Of Home Town:

Editors Of Home Town If the hotel or resort is a large one, catering to wealthy people from all over the country, you can do a good and valuable publicity job for the management by photographing guests enjoying themselves and having the hotel send the pictures to the editors of home town papers of such guests.

This knack, which is only partly observation and probably more a matter of imagination, is a talent which one may or may not be able to acquire. Most editors probably would tell you that if you don't have it you won't get it without working hard to develop it. The editors, you see, are constantly trying, despite discouraging results, to develop the feature sense in their own staff photographers. A good many editors post bonuses for their spot news men who bring in feature sets and I know of one editor who threatened to fire any photographer who didn't produce at least one feature every week. He couldn't stand by this threat, by the way, or he would have run out of photographers within a few weeks.


The cover was an in dustrial photograph by Margaret Bourke-White of th< construction of a great dam near Fort Peck, Montana, k the style for which, as a photographer for Fortune, she was noted. The opening picture story, however, focused not on the construction, but on the life of the builders oi the dam and their families in temporary cities in the desert. It was not what the editors had assigned, and they wrote, by way of introduction: What the Editors expected—for use in some later issue-were construction pictures as only Bourke-White can take them. What the Editors got was a human document of frontier life which, to them at least, was a revelation.
