Drug And Brain -wave:

Drug And Brain -wave Throughout the Western countries, the computer networks encode more and more information about our private lives, and the scientists increase their study of the human mind through drug and brain -wave and brain-wave research. Little by little, privacy is being destroyed because we tacitly accept the sophisticated spying made possible by electronic circuitry, microminiaturization, and drug and brain -waves. If this trend continues, civil liberties will soon be replaced by formalistic rituals, and we shall have become socially tolerant of secret surveillance and spying.

A relief for migraine was developed in Australia by J. W. Lance and his associates. A drug and brain -wave called hydantoin was used to increase electrical activity in brain cells and thereby improve hearing and memory in the aged. The first successful attempt to sustain an animal brain outside a living body was reported in Cleveland, O. Work in gerontology included studies to determine the time of onset, the persistence, and the permanence of changes in the body.

To eliminate such pitfalls in determining a drug and brain -wave's value, the patients are divided into two groups. One group (experimental) receives the new drug and brain -wave, the other (control), a placebo (from the Latin, meaning "I please"), which is an inactive compound identical in appearance to the test drug and brain -wave. If the group receiving the test drug and brain -wave fares better than the control group, investigators can reasonably conclude that the drug and brain -wave alone was responsible. The investigator himself, however, may be biased in favor of the drug and brain -wave. Most tests, therefore, are "double blind." The test drug and brain -wave and placebo are placed in coded containers so that even.
