Doctorates In Medicine 1884: RIZAL, re-sal', Jose (in full, Jos£ PRO-IASIO RIZAL Y MERCADO ALONSO), Philippine author and national hero: b. Calamba, Laguna Province, the Philippines, June 19, 1861; d.Manila, Dec. 30, 1896. He took doctorates in medicine 1884 in medicine (1884) and philosophy (1885) at the University of Madrid, and continued his studies in France and Germany. In 1886 he published the novel Noli me tangere, a denunciation of Spanish rule in the Philippines, which caused his exile from the islands soon after his return there in 1887.
He wrote 'Recurrent Papilloma of the PJiarynx' in 'Illustrated Medicine and Surgery' (1884) ; 'Foreign Bodies in the Larynx and Trachea' and 'Foreign Bodies in the Pharynx and (Esophagus' in 'System of Diseases of the Ear, Nose^and Throat' (1893); 'Injuries and Deformities of the Nose and Throat' and 'Operations in the Upper Air Passages' in 'American Textbook of Diseases of the Eye, Ear and Throat' (1899), etc.
RIFFES, grif'is, Charles Tomlinson (1884-920), American composer, who is best described > an eclectic impressionist. He was born in Imira, N. Y., on Sept. 27, 1884. After complet-ig his musical education in Germany, Griffes ^turned to the United States in 1907 and sup-srted himself by teaching music at a boys' :hool in Tarrytown, N. Y., where he worked for le rest of his short life. He died in New York ity on April 8, 1920.
