Digital Computer: Since the early 1950's a fourth form of information—digital data—has become important in special applications of radio. Digital data signals are used for instance, in the radio transmission of digital computer data. See also COMPUTERS—4. Computer* in Industry and Engineering (Communication Systems).
A raster chart is one that has been scanned from a paper chart—think of it as a digital photograph of a paper chart. A vector chart is one that has been drawn from charting information using computer technology. In both cases, the result is a digital file that can be stored in a small cartridge or on a CD-ROM. In most cases, the cartridge or CD will contain a number of charts of a rather wide region.
First produced by the Digital Equipment Corporation in 1963, minicomputers were also later produced by Data General. Digital's compact machines could be installed almost anywhere.
In 1964 IBM consolidated its position in the marketplace with the introduction of the enormously successful System/360, the first compatible family of computers.
In 1971 Marcian Hoff,Jr, an engineer at the Intel Corporation, located in Silicon Valley, invented the microprocessor, and another stage in the development of the computer began.
