Digital Computer File: Since the early 1950's a fourth form of information—digital data—has become important in special applications of radio. Digital data signals are used for instance, in the radio transmission of digital computer data. See also COMPUTERS—4. Computer* in Industry and Engineering (Communication Systems).
A raster chart is one that has been scanned from a paper chart—think of it as a digital photograph of a paper chart. A vector chart is one that has been drawn from charting information using computer technology. In both cases, the result is a digital file that can be stored in a small cartridge or on a CD-ROM. In most cases, the cartridge or CD will contain a number of charts of a rather wide region.
An electronic chart is simply a digital computer file that contains all or part of the navigation information that appears on a conventional paper chart. These come in two different types, each with its advantages.
