In 1965 Datel (computer data transmission) was introduced over the telephone, and by 1969 some 4,500 data transmission terminals were in service. In 1969 Datel was extended to 10 European countries.
Telegraph Services. In 1839 the world's first electric telegraph system was installed on the Great Western Railway. The Electric Telegraph Company was formed in 1845 and later found several imitators, but the telegraph act of 1868 empowered the post master general to acquire all inland telegraphs.
Since the early 1950's a fourth form of information—digital data—has become important in special applications of radio. Digital data signals are used for instance, in the radio transmission of digital computer data. See also COMPUTERS—4. Computer* in Industry and Engineering (Communication Systems).
By 1960 all internal Telex services were automatic, and in 1961 direct dialing was introduced on the international network.
In 1964 Datel computer data transmission service was introduced on Telex. Telex subscribers increased from 7,100 in 1960-1961 to 26,000 in 1968-1969. Overseas calls accounted for 40% of the total. See also sections 20. Newspapers and Magazines; and 21.
