Particularly rich in articles of historic as well as artistic interest, the total number of pieces in the museum collection is about 2,500. These represent the cream of Mr. Riggs' original collection, he having possessed at one time some 8,000 objects; but these were sorted, weeded out, and many pieces of the commoner sort exchanged for single objects of greater merit, or sold at public auction.
