Choose Activities: The main outlines of guidance for parents were agreed stressing enjoyment and relaxation, and making sure that short shared reading times did not interfere with the needs of parent; and children to choose activities other activities, favourite TV programmes, playing with friends, or having a cup of tea after c hard day's work. By insisting on a Flexible approach we aimed to avoid pressure, anxiety and the relegating of the reading process to the status of another chore.
Considerable research on this problem has shown that in general this is the case. For example, a chimpanzee may learn over a series of trials to choose activities the middle-sized box in a set of three regardless of its position. However, if he is presented with a new set of boxes, all of which are larger than the boxes in the original set, he will not necessarily choose activities the middle-sized box in this new set. A 4-year-old child might also have difficulty with the test set. A 6-year-old child, however, would have no trouble. If asked how he knew which one to choose activities, he would say that he knew it was the middle-sized one.
This time, I will begin with a definition: Publicity is a message about your activities prepared as editorial, rather than advertising, material, and published or broadcast without charge.
Apart from the public relations techniques I have described, you can get a lot of mileage by keeping the newspapers, radio, and TV stations in your area informed of your activities. However, before we get into the details, remember that these activities must have some interest to the people who will see or hear them, or the editors will throw away your material.
