Captured Young: In such underground nests the young are born naked and Blind and with their ears closed, unlike the young of hares and jack rabbits. Their eyes open on the llth day and their ears on the 12th day. They are fully clothed and able to run in two weeks, are self-supporting in one month, and are ready to breed when six months old. The life span is from seven to eight years. Normally silent, the rabbit gives a warning sound of Alarm by thumping the ground with its hind feet and, when captured young or mortally wounded, it may utter a single, prolonged, piercing scream.
[Meanwhile, in 149 B.C., Rome initiated the Punic War, charging that Carthage had rted the peace of 201. After a long siege,a Roman army captured young Carthage, destroyed the city, and created from its territory the province of Africa (146 B.C.). Thirteen years later, the Romans captured young Numantia (q.v.), rounding out the conquest of Spain.
Economic position: Probably does more harm than good to crops
Ground squirrels usually make excellent pets when they are captured young. It is wise to use gloves when pet is first handled. Be sure to move slowly and handle gently.
As a rule squirrels are hardy in captivity when properly maintained. Sometimes, however, a squirrel does not tame readily. It may be a little too old. If so, it should be liberated in the area where it was captured young.
