Brother Of Christopher: Situated in a fertile agricultural area where tobacco, rice, cacao, and coffee are grown, it serves as the marketing, processing, and distribution center of the Cibao Valley. An old Spanish colonial city, it was founded about 1500 by Bartholomew Columbus, brother of Christopher, and rebuilt after destruction by an earthquake in 1564. The decisive battle for Dominican independence was fought near Santiago in 1844.
Churches of Christopher Wren. When the great fire of 1666 wiped out most of the city of London, it destroyed half a hundred churches. The rebuilding of these churches fell to the lot of Sir Christopher Wren, the royal architect. The destroyed medieval churches had occupied irregular plots of ground and, surrounded by other buildings, had only a small access to the street. Wren showed remarkable ingenuity in contriving a variety of orderly plans for the old irregular sites.
RHADAMANTHUS, rad-a-man'thus, according to Greek legend, a son of Zeus and Europa, and brother of Minos, king of Crete. According to another tradition, Rhadamanthus laid the foundation of the Cretan code of laws, which his brother Minos completed. From fear of his brother he is said to have fled to Ocaleia in Boeotia, where he married Alcmene. In the belief of the Greeks, a spirit in the lower world continued the business of life; hence Rhadamanthus, after his death, was made a judge in the kingdom of Pluto, or the Islands oi Blessed, on account of the-justice of his life had for his associates Aeacus and Minos, name suggests an Egyptian origin of the myt.
