A Young Israeli: Muslim Palestinians living in Israeli-controlled territories have been fighting for an independent state in what they consider to be their homeland. The uprising against Israeli rule began in the West Bank and Gaza Strip in 1987, organized by the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO). International peace efforts led to a series of accords and treaties and opened dialogue between the Israeli government and PLO leader Yassir Arafat. However, there has been continued bloodshed and violence, and little headway has been made in establishing a lasting peace for the region.
We then follow Safdie at age 15 to Montreal, where as a young Israeli "Socialist Zionist" he felt out of place but triumphed in school.
An aptitude test helped direct him to architecture.
Then comes what is still the most astonishing of Safdie's works, the Habitat housing, done for the Montreal World's Fair of 1967 while the architect was still in his 20s.
It has mod research laboratories and facilities for postgrai ate medical training. After the Arab-Israeli V in 1967, Hadassah returned to Mount Scof where its first medical center had been locah to build a general hospital, including a rehabilil tion pavilion, a school of occupational thera] and physiotherapy, and a center for foreij youths studying and working in Israel, f. services are nonsectarian.
Hadassah also operates the Hadassah AIi( Seligsberg Comprehensive High School in Jen salem, with 900 students, and two vocations training centers for young adults.
