Gooseflesh is caused by the contraction of arrectores pilorum muscles. Each of these muscles consists of smooth muscle fibers extending from about the middle of each hair follicle upward into the dermis. Because a hair follicle does not lie perpendicular to the skin surface, but at an angle, the contraction of the muscle pushes the hair follicle and the surrounding skin upward, forming a tiny bump. It also forces the hair into a more upright position. See also HAIR.
